DOMREBEL was founded in Montréal in 2003 by Justin Svatina and Don Nguyen, two university students who started by hand-printing and distressing tees in a garage. The name comes from the Latin Dominus Rebellis, master of rebellion, and the work runs to that: original cartoon characters and a satirical, dark-humoured take on familiar childhood imagery, hand-painted and hand-finished. The studio treats clothing and canvas as the same surface, moving original artwork between ready-to-wear, painting, sculpture, and digital media out of its D.R.S.M. atelier in St-Henri.
We carry DOMREBEL at Feuille, including graphic tees, hoodies, denim, knitwear and hats, hand-finished in Montréal and available online and in-store at our Vancouver boutique. The graphics carry a sardonic edge under the cartoon surface, so the joke tends to land a beat after you notice the drawing.
